GAS AND ELECTRICITY customers face higher bills from today as new price increases and a greater public service levy take effect.
Gas prices will increase from today for customers of Bord Gáis, ESB Electric Ireland and Airtricity.
The Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) last month approved an increase of just over 2 per cent in gas prices for Bord Gáis customers.
Price comparison website bonkers.ie estimate that this will increase the cost to customers by €18.43 per year and push the average cost per household to €980 a year.
They also say they the cost of home electricity is also expected to go up by around 1.5 per cent in the coming month, which could add €17.22 to electricity bills.
Airtricity will also increase its charge to gas customers by 2 per cent beginning today. The company will also raise electricity prices by 3.5 per cent next month, a move that will effect 380,000 households who will pay an average additional cost of €39 per year according to uSwitch.ie.
ESB Electric Ireland also boost gas prices by the same rate today.
PSO levy
In addition, the Government levy which encourages the use of domestic fuel such as peat as well as renewable sources also rises. Domestic users can expect to pay an extra €3.57 excluding VAT per month for as a result of the service charge increase.
