'Ula will be greatly missed'- School tribute to girl (6) killed while cycling in Galway

Ula Grigaityte, a 6-year-old has died following a collision last weekend with a heavy goods vehicle.

THE SIX-YEAR-OLD girl who died when cycling her bicycle in Galway city at the weekend has been named locally as Ula Grigaityte.

The young girl was in senior infants at Scoil Róis Primary School in Salthill and the school’s principal paid tribute to her today.

“This is a terrible tragedy for her family and our school community. We are deeply saddened by these events. Our sympathy and thoughts are with Ula’s family and friends,” said Michele McCarra, principal of Scoil Róis Primary School, in a statement today. 

“Ula will be greatly missed by all who knew her.”

McCarra also said the school has implemented the Critical Incident Management Plan.

Psychologists from the National Educational Psychological Service have been with the school all day to support and advise staff in their efforts to help the students. Staff have been helping students with the tragic event. 

Galway Mayor Peter Keane said this was a “tragedy of unbearable mention” and his condolences are with the parents, family, school and wider community.

He added that every support would be made available to the “resilient” community to respond to this “terrible moment.”

The collision involved the young girl and a truck at the junction of Headford Road and Sandyvale Lawn.

In a statement, gardaí said the child was fatally injured as a result of the collision. Her body was removed from the scene to University Hospital Galway. 

Gardaí said the male driver of the truck, aged in his 30s was uninjured.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Gardaí are also appealing for any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in the area between 11:45am and 12:15pm today to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
