Listeria monocytogenes can cause an infection that can can lead to mild flu-like symptoms, or gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea.

“In rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications,” the FSAI said.

Pregnant women, babies, and people with weakened immune systems (including the elderly) are most vulnerable to infection.

The period in which a person is infected and begins to show symptoms averages three weeks, but it can range between three and 70 days.
