Ian Bailey to proceed with Supreme Court extradition appeal

The 53-year-old has been given the go-ahead to appeal his extradition to France for questioning over the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier.

IAN BAILEY HAS BEEN granted permission to appeal his extradition to France for questioning over the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier 14 years ago, the PA reports.

Bailey, 53, has always denied any involvement in the Frenchwoman’s death.

French authorities have issued a European Arrest Warrant to interview Bailey over her death and in March, the High Court ruled that he should be extradited to France.

Today, the same court granted Bailey permission to begin his appeal to the Supreme Court on the basis that an extradition order for Bailey marked a new reality where every Irish citizen faces the possibility of being prosecuted in another jurisdiction, Newstalk reports.

Bailey’s legal counsel, Ronan Munro, had earlier said there was no firm indication from France over whether Bailey would face any charges relating to Toscan du Plantier’s murder.

No one has ever been charged for the French filmmaker’s death in west Cork in December 1996.
