More than 35 million letters will pass through the Dublin Mail Centre this month - here's how they do it

Step inside the Dublin Mail Centre.

TheJournal.ie / YouTube

THE DUBLIN MAIL Centre is a hive of activity this month as millions of letters pass along its conveyor belts and through its sorting machines.

And that’s not including the container loads of packages that need to be forwarded on to their final destinations.

An Post’s largest sorting centre is located on the Naas Road and is filled with machines that help get your letters to where they’re meant to go.

They even give Santa a hand…

Well done to all the hard working staff of An Post and the Dublin Mail centre.

Yet they admit to delaying package post from China. Sometimes it’s several months before they bother sorting and delivering it. Total disregard for the universal postal obligation.

@Minom Pnnomm: Agreed. Last package from China was tracked to this sorting office. Almost two months after arriving there before it was delivered to my home. Not customs checked so that wasn’t the issue. Very unprofessional.

@Keith Wizzy: customs checks are done inside the An Post system afaik. An Post have raised their charges massively in the last few years also. This passive agressive policy of ignoring post from China/HK/Singapore is very annoying. It’s to actively discourage people buying from there so the volume will decrease making life easier for them.

I am old enough to remember 2 deliveries a day… Post collected from postboxes over the weekend… no postal codes but fast delivery. The volume is massive now but technology takes care of it , or should. … but although life has got faster some things have become slower…. I could get 2 buses from Merrion Square to Marino, have my dinner at lunchtime with my parents…and be back at work , another 2 buses, in time to sign back in and not be penalised……. even had a smoke with Da ! Ya could not get into town now and back now…. quicker walking !

Great memories of Christmas working in the Sorting Office when there was mighty craic while working all the hours God sent. Remember a poorly packed bottle of whiskey smashing and leaking on the floor with one of my colleagues desperately looking for a sponge.
