Plans to pass a generational smoking ban in New Zealand were scrapped in 2023 Alamy Stock Photo

Should Ireland introduce a generational smoking ban?

The Maldives is the only country in the world enforcing a ban of this kind.

THE MALDIVES HAS become the first country in the world to ban smoking for younger generations.

People born on or after 1 January 2007 will be prohibited from buying, selling or smoking tobacco. Vaping was already made illegal for all ages last year.

The ban “reflects the government’s strong commitment to protecting young people from the harms of tobacco,” according to the Maldives’ health department.

The move got us thinking about whether similar measures should be introduced elsewhere – including in Ireland.

So, what do you think: Should Ireland introduce a generational smoking ban?
