Ireland invited to G20 leaders summit at Trump's golf resort in Miami

It will be only the second time that Ireland participates in the global forum.

TAOISEACH MICHEÁL MARTIN is expected to attend the G20 leaders summit in Miami in December after Ireland was invited by the United States.

It will be only the second time that Ireland has participated in the Group of 20, after making its debut appearance last year following an invitation from hosts South Africa.

The forum of the world’s largest economies regularly come together to discuss major issues related to the global economy. Ireland is not one of the 19 members, but is invited to take part as a guest country.

The US resumed the rotating presidency of the G20 in December, with Donald Trump announcing that the summit will be held at his own Trump National Doral golf resort in Miami.

He said it was the ideal choice for the gathering because it is “beautiful” and the Florida weather is nice. “Everybody wants it there because it’s right next to the airport, it’s the best location, it’s beautiful, a beautiful everything.”

He had made similar plans to host the 2020 G7 summit at the Doral resort during his first presidency, but it drew backlash from his Democratic opponents, who called it “among the most brazen examples yet of the president’s corruption.”

He later ditched the plan with a swipe at “media and Democrat crazed and irrational hostility” – and the summit eventually never took place because of the Covid pandemic.
