Exports and imports dive in April

The latest data from the CSO shows the lowest seasonally-adjusted monthly export figures since March 2010.

A DECREASE IN both exports and imports has been noted for April, according to newly released figures from the Central Statistics Office.

The data shows the lowest seasonally-adjusted monthly export figures since March 2010, and accounts for a 9 per cent decrease (worth €713 million) when compared to the previous month.

Meanwhile, imports fell by 23 per cent over the same period.

Chemicals and related products accounted for €4,192 million (60 per cent) of the total exports of €7,037 million in April 2012.

Exports of medical and pharmaceutical products decreased by €471 million (21 per cent) while the value of exports of organic chemicals declined by €298 million (17 per cent) when comparing April 2012 with April 2011.

The European Union accounted for 59 per cent (€4,184 million) of total exports in April 2012 with Belgium and Great Britain accounting for 30 per cent of the total exports.

Meanwhile, the United States was the main destination for exports outside the EU accounting for 17 per cent of total exports in April 2012.

Over the first four months of 2012, exports amounted to €30,696 million and imports €16,995 million – representing a trade surplus of €13,700 million.
