'A dream come true': 14-year-old Irish actor lands major role in new Star Wars film

Flynn Gray will star opposite Ryan Gosling in the 2027 blockbuster.

A 14-YEAR-OLD Irish actor has scored a major role in the upcoming Star Wars film, Star Wars: Starfighter.

Flynn Gray, a teenage actor from Dublin, was officially confirmed on the cast list this week by Disney and Lucasfilm.

The announcement was accompanied by a photo showing Gray alongside lead actor Ryan Gosling and the iconic Star Wars Landspeeder.

Production on the standalone feature began this week in the UK.

Directed by Shawn Levy and set to hit theatres in May 2027, Starfighter is an entirely original story within the Star Wars universe, taking place approximately five years after 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.

The film is not connected to the Skywalker Saga, though it promises a galaxy-spanning adventure in which Gosling’s character protects a young charge from evildoers.

Other confirmed cast members include Amy Adams, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, and Daniel Ings.

“I feel a profound sense of excitement and honor as we begin production on Starfighter,” Levy said in a statement.

“From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime.”

Gray’s talent agency, Take2, described the role as “a dream come true” for the young actor.

Isobel Moloney, speaking on behalf of the agency, told The Journal that Flynn has “worked really hard to earn this,” adding that the actor has been in the business for over seven years.

Before Starfighter, Gray appeared in an episode of Netflix’s Wednesday, and had a role in the Irish crime drama Borderline. He has also appeared in multiple feature films.

“He’s been building up a strong portfolio over the years,” Moloney said. “This role for Flynn isn’t coming out of nowhere – the kid is working very, very hard.”

While details of Gray’s role are being kept under wraps, it is clear that he will have significant screen time alongside Gosling.

Moloney confirmed that he remains “very busy” but is still able to “live a normal life outside of it.”

Executive producers on the project include Gosling himself, Dan Levine, Mary McLaglen, and Josh McLaglen, with Kathleen Kennedy and Levy producing.
