Belfast rap group Kneecap missed out on a nomination today after being shortlisted in two categories.

BELFAST-BORN SCREEN EDITOR Nick Emerson, who edited the the Vatican thriller Conclave, has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Editing.

Kneecap and Saoirse Ronan have missed out on high-profile nominations while Emilia Pérez, a Spanish-language thriller, picked up 13 nods including Best Picture.

It was followed by immigrant saga The Brutalist and the musical adaptation of Wicked – which each picked up 10 nominations. Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown and  Conclave bagged eight nods each.

Belfast-born Nick Emerson, who edited Conclave, has picked up a nomination for his work.

Belfast rap group Kneecap had been shortlisted for the Best International Feature Film and Best Original Song for their semi-biographical film of the same name, but missed out on a nomination today.

Musicians Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí, who made their acting debuts in the movie, have already picked up a number of awards for the film and were nominated for a number of Baftas last week.

Simone Kirby, who appears in the film, told a Fís Éireann event earlier today that, regardless whether the film got nominated, the trio should be proud of the achievement and the movie they created.

“I thought we were making a small, little film – it was really good fun. It was a first-time narrative-feature director, three first-time actors, a really great script, but you never know how it’s going to come together.

“The music was incredible and the editing was brilliant. It just shows you what a group of really good talent can do,” she said. “I saw it at Sundance [...] and I was really amazed.”

Actor Saoirse Ronan was not nominated for an award. She was nominated for leading actress for her role in The Outrun in the Baftas earlier this month.

Jeremy Strong was nominated for Best Actor in a supporting role for his performance in The Apprentice, a dramatised biopic about the upbringing of Donald Trump which was produced by an Irish production company Tailored Films.

This year’s Oscar nominations were unveiled in an announcement delayed by the devastating Los Angeles wildfires. Voting deadlines had to be extended this month, as the US entertainment capital was devastated by multiple blazes.

As areas in Los Angeles are still impacted by the fires, nominees were announced virtually – with the glitzy ceremony itself still set for 2 March.
