Irish Rail unveils plans to develop new station in west Dublin

The new station will be on the Heuston Commuter line.

IRISH RAIL HAS unveiled plans to develop a new station in the Kylemore area of Dublin, on the Heuston Commuter line.

The proposed station is located to the west of Kylemore Road Bridge, between ParkWest and Heuston Stations.

The new station is included in the Greater Dublin Area Transport Strategy and Irish Rail has today launched a consultation period which will run until 3 October.

Information is available to view online here and an in-person public consultation event will also take place at Ballyfermot Library on Thursday from 4pm to 8pm.

Additional opportunities to access services to the south and west of the country from the propose station, including Cork, Limerick and Galway, will also be provided via the planned new station at Heuston West, which will be constructed as part of the DART+ South West Project.

Subject to planning permission being granted and the availability of funding, construction of the new station at Kylemore will be delivered in conjunction with the DART+ Programme works.

Irish Rail added that the proposed new station is also well placed to integrate with future Luas connections.

Following the public consultation, Irish Rail plans to commence work on a planning application in early 2026.

Jim Meade, Chief Executive of Irish Rail, said the planned new station at Kylemore “demonstrates the power of public consultation”.

“The public spoke and we listened,” said Meade.

“This station will provide excellent connectivity for the current residents of Ballyfermot and the future residents and workers of the City Edge area.”

Meanwhile, Eoin Gillard, Director of Public Transport Investment at the National Transport Authority said the proposed station is a “vital step in delivering sustainable, accessible transport options for communities in west Dublin”.

Gillard encouraged people to engage with the consultation process and added: “Public consultation plays a vital role in shaping transport projects to meet the needs of the people they serve.”

Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien also encouraged the public to engage consultation.

Elsewhere, Minister of State with responsibility for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports, Séan Canney, said he is “delighted to see the progress being made on Kylemore station”.

He further remarked that “adding new rail stations and upgrading existing ones will play a key role in broadening access to the rail network and implementing the vision set out in the All-Island Strategic Rail Review”.
