THE PRESIDENT, THE Taoiseach, the Lord Mayor of Dublin, along with various other office-holders and members of the Government, have taken part in a ceremony at Dublin’s Garden of Remembrance to mark the centenary of the founding of the Irish Volunteers.
‘Óglaigh na hÉireann’ were officially launched with a rally at the Rotunda on 25 November 1913; on that occasion, the hall was filled with 4,000 people, while another 3,000 gathered outside. Patrick Pearse and Eoin MacNéill were among the speakers.
This morning, the anniversary was marked with a fly-past by the Air Corps, while the Defence Forces also provided a Cavalry Escort, Military Bands and a Guard of Honour.
After the ceremony, the President was also due to open a special Military Archives Exhibition on the early years of the Volunteers at the Rotunda.
