Jimmy Kimmel's late night show is returning after suspension over Charlie Kirk comments

AMERICAN TELEVISION HOST Jimmy Kimmel’s late night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live! is returning to air tomorrow.

The show was suspended by Disney last week after Kimmel made a comment regarding the shooting of Charlie Kirk on air.

In a statement issued by the company today, Disney said: “Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country.

“It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last few days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”

On Monday night, Kimmel covered a few topical issues in his opening monologue before turning to the death of Kirk.

He said, “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterise this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”

Footage then played of  US President Donald Trump being asked by a reporter how he was holding up after the death of Kirk, an ally of his. Trump deflected and spoke about the construction of the White House’s ballroom.

Kimmel joked that Trump’s response was more akin to how a child grieves a goldfish than an adult a friend.

On Wednesday, the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission threatened the license of ABC affiliates who broadcast Kimmel’s show.

Hours later, it was announced that the show was being taken off air indefinitely.

The show’s suspension followed the cancellation of Stephen Colbert’s show, both of which were celebrated by Trump.

Talk show hosts in the US and further afield, including Ireland’s Patrick Kielty, stood in solidarity with Kimmel and Colbert, with many saying that the suspension of Kimmel’s show was against the US’ first amendment right to free speech.

A movement of people cancelling their Disney subscriptions followed.
