Jadin and Joe Bell

Dad walking across US in memory of gay son is hit and killed by truck

Joe Bell was hit and killed by a semi-tractor on 9 October.

WHEN JOSEPH BELL’S son Jadin died after trying to take his own life, he decided to do something to raise awareness about the dangers of bullying.

Joseph (Joe) Bell set off from Oregon in April to walk across the United States. But sadly, his journey came to a premature end on Wednesday when he was struck and killed by a truck (semi-tractor) on a highway.

His official website states that Bell was walking eastbound on the shoulder of Highway 40, about 2 miles northwest of Kit Carson in Colorado, when he was killed.

His son Jadin had died after trying to take his own life in January at a school playground. His father said he had been bullied due his sexuality.

Bell  had been blogging about his experiences on his website, where he said that his ‘walk for change’ was to help change the way people communicate, end the stigma of suicide and fight for equal rights for everyone.

Today, a message on his website said that it was with great sadness that they had to share the news of Bell’s passing:

Joe’s purpose was clear from the moment he left his hometown on foot. He repeatedly said if he could help even one child, it would be worth it. He had a strong message and was making a global impact. We will remember him, his son Jadin, and the equality, anti-bullying and suicide prevention causes that were so dear to him. Please help us continue his fight by supporting www.FacesForChange.com, a non-profit set up in memory of Joe’s son.

The websites www.JoesWalkforChange.com and www.Facebook.com/joeswalkforchange will continue to provide updates and “will remain as a memorial for this incredible man and his journey”.

During his walk, Bell spoke to schools, groups and organisations about his message of change.
