Kildare landfill blaze under investigation

Garda inquiry launched after another fire breaks out at controversial Kerdiffstown waste site.

GARDAÍ ARE INVESTIGATING the cause of a huge fire at a controversial landfill site near Naas, Co Kildare.

In May, the EPA was granted a court order preventing Neiphin Trading, the operators of the Kerdiffstown site, from accepting any further waste, RTÉ reported at the time.

The environmental authority said it had received over 300 complaints from the public regarding the emission of serious odours from the site.

A fire broke out at the landfill yesterday at around 5.45pm, according to the Irish Independent. The blaze, which destroyed a large shed on the property, was tackled by five fire brigade units. They brought it under control by about 8pm.

This is the third fire at the site in the space of two months, according to the local residents speaking to RTÉ’s News at One. People said they are concerned about the odours coming from the landfill, and called for it to be cleaned up as soon as possible.

RTÉ reports that this fire was much smaller than the most recent previous blaze.

Legal action surrounding the landfill is ongoing, and the EPA is believed to be facing a clean-up bill of up to €40m.
