Take a look around this five-star B&B on its own big estate

It’s a very big house in the country.

NOW THIS IS a Georgian country estate that stands out from the pack.

Rathvinden House is on the market for €1.95m, and whoever becomes the new owner of this abode will also get 14 acres of parkland and grazing paddock to boot.

The house dates back to 1810, and is currently a five-star Fáilte Ireland-rated bed and breakfast. Perfect for if you’d get a little lonely rambling around a huge house on your own.

It’s the sister house to Mount Juliet, and was once run as a base for hunting horses by Major McCalmond.

It also has a literary connection – CS Lewis’s stepson Douglas Gresham lived here for many years, and helped do the place up.

The two-storey-over-basement house is 875sq metres in size, and is in spectacular condition.

It’s not the kind of place where the new owner would have to do a huge amount of work.

So, what do you get for the price tag?

There’s the huge house itself, its lawns and paddocks, a beautiful amount of trees like oaks, beech and cedars, gravel pathways, a unique rose arch, a greenhouse, potting shed, orchard and meadows.

Then there’s the tennis court and house, and the gate lodge.

If it’s privacy the new owner wants, they get that with electric gates, and secure fencing.

Horse owners will find plenty of places for their equine brood, with 13 stables to be used.

Interestingly, full planning permission was recently given for the yard to be turned into a themed Victorian village, meant to be used as a tourist attraction. Now that’s an unusual selling point.

Plus, the house is very near Carlow and Bagnelstown, and not so far from Kilkenny and Dublin.

An unusual house indeed – but then, what’s a dream home without a bit of quirk?
