WHAT’S THE STORY?

1. The government is expected to announce an inquiry into the operation of mother and baby homes in Ireland during the last century. The Taoiseach has indicated that the investigation will take in wider issues and not just focus on the Tuam grave controversy.

2. On Tuesday 5 November last year, 467 women and 229 children received help from domestic abuse support services.

3. The inquest into the February 2011 Cork Airport crash has heard from a number of survivors this morning who have described the atmosphere in the plane. Donal Walsh said there was no screaming, while Heather Wilson remembers believing she would be burnt alive. Another passenger said a prayer. [RTÉ News]

4. The body of a homeless man was discovered in an unused area of the Mater Hospital in Dublin one week after he died. The tragedy has raised concerns at the Peter McVerry Trust, with CEO Pat Doyle stating:

The fact that a homeless individual died in an abandoned area in one our largest hospitals in the centre of our capital city clearly shows that we are simply not doing enough to support people on the margins.

5. A pedestrian in Mayo became the 80th person to die on Irish roads so far this year. His death at 3.30am in Killala brings the 2014 death toll to the same level of this time last year.
