Mayo pedestrian dies after being struck by a van

The man in his 60s was pronounced dead at the scene.

A MAN IN HIS 60s was struck by a van and died in the early hours of this morning in Mayo.

The pedestrian was fatally injured while on the Ballycastle Road in Killala at about 3.30am.

He was pronounced dead and his body remains at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle involved was not injured in the incident.

The stretch of road has been closed for forensic exams and local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them at the local station on 096 32111.

The deceased is the 80th person to die on Irish roads so far this year. The number matches that of this time in 2013.
