Man arrested after woman (40s) dies following assault in Co Waterford

Gardaí and emergency services responded to an incident at a residence in Grange Heights, Waterford city at around 6.15pm.

A WOMAN HAS died and a man has been arrested following an assault in Co Waterford. 

Gardaí and emergency services responded to an incident at a residence in Grange Heights, Waterford city at around 6.15pm. 

A woman, aged in her 40s, was taken to University Hospital Waterford. She was pronounced dead a short time later.

The State Pathologist has been notified and a post-mortem examination will be arranged.

A man, aged in his 40s, was arrested at the scene.

He is currently detained at a garda station in the Waterford Division under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

The scene is currently preserved for technical examination.

A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established at Waterford garda station.

A family liaison officer has been assigned to support the family of the deceased.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.

Anyone who was in the Grange Heights area between 6pm and 6.30pm this evening and who may have camera footage, including CCTV or dashcam, is asked to provide this footage to investigating gardaí.

A spokesperson said investigations into the matter are ongoing.
