LAST UPDATE | 19 Aug 2025

A MAN HAS been charged with two counts of attempted murder after a petrol bomb was thrown into a pub in Armagh.

The incident happened last night in the Toby Jug Bar on Irish Street in Armagh.

PSNI officers received a report of a fire at around 8.55pm and the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service also attended and extinguished the blaze.

In addition to a petrol bomb being thrown into the bar, patrons were also threatened with a knife as they fled to escape the flames.

Video of the incident has circulated online and shows people, including children, fleeing the bar after the arson.

Two men, one in his 30s and one in his 60s, were injured when the device was thrown and treated in hospital for their injuries.

One of these men has since been discharged.

A 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, arson with intent to endanger life, and possession of a blade or point in a public place.

This evening, he was charged with two counts of attempted murder, arson with intent to endanger life, possession of a blade or point, and three counts of criminal damage.

He is expected to appear before Newry Magistrates Court tomorrow.

In a statement on social media, the Toby Jug said it is “shocked and saddened” by the attack.

The bar will remain closed while it assesses the damage and “ensures safety for our customers and staff”.

The statement added: “The Toby Jug has always been, and will continue to be, a place for friends, neighbours, and the wider community to come together.

“We are working closely with the authorities to ensure the safety of everyone moving forward.”
