
GARDAÍ IN BUNCRANA have arrested a man in relation to the fatal road collision that occurred at Clonmany in Donegal on 11 July 2010.
The 22-year-old will appear at Buncrana District Court this morning. He has been charged in relation to the deaths of eight people.
The two-car crash was the worst road accident ever seen in Ireland. Seven of the victims were travelling in a Volkswagen Passat, while the eighth person to die was the driver of the second vehicle.
The driver of the Volkswagen Passat survived.
The seven young men who died were 21-year-old Mark McLaughlin, 19-year-olds Paul Doherty and Ciaran Sweeney, 22-year-old Eamonn McDaid, 21-year-olds Damien and Patrick McLaughlin and James McEleney, 23.
The driver of the second car was 66-year-old bachelor Hughie Friel.
The crash occurred at Meenadiff in Clonmany on a tight and bendy road. At the time it was reported that the Passat collided with a Renault before losing control and ploughing into Friel’s Toyota.
