Man in his 70s arrested in connection with investigation into illegal cockfighting

Gardaí said investigations are ongoing.

GARDAÍ HAVE ARRESTED and charged a man in his 70s in connection with an investigation into a suspected illegal cockfighting event in Emyvale, Co Monaghan.

He has been released and is due to appear at Monaghan District Court at a future date.

The investigation began after gardaí received a report of a suspected illegal cockfighting event at a private residence in the town on 27 July 2024.

“A large number of people fled the scene upon the arrival of gardaí,” a spokesperson said at the time.

“The assistance of the Department of Agriculture was then sought and a warrant to search the residence under Section 45 of Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013 was obtained.”

Fifteen dead roosters were found at the scene and the Department of Agriculture seized a further 70 birds, as well as evidence of suspected cockfighting.

Gardaí said investigations are ongoing.
