ALTHOUGH MOST PEOPLE most likely have no idea who Thomas Coote was, he has his place in Irish history.
From 1696 to 1697 he was Lord Chancellor of Ireland – which as the time was the highest judicial office in the country. He also had a notable career as a politician, sitting in the Irish House of Commons and holding a number of other offices.
Interestingly, he was also friends Jonathan Swift, author of ‘Gulliver’s Travels’, and once sought a testimony from Swift on his own character.
Bellamont Forest in Cavan was built by Coote in 1725 and is where he lived until his death in 1733. It has been modernised in recent times while maintaining a number of its original features. Its interior has a floor space of more than 11,000 sq. ft.
The house comes with five bedrooms, all of which have their own en suites and two of which have their own walk-in dressing rooms. The lands surrounding it measure around 1,000 acres, of which 477 acres are afforded sporting rights.
The house was built in a Palladian style by Sir Edward Lovett Pearce, Thomas Coote’s nephew and the same architect who designed the Bank of Ireland building on College Green in Dublin.
