FIRST LADY MICHELLE Obama has said she does not want to follow in her husband’s footsteps, confirming she will never run in a presidential election.
Although the 49-year-old ruled herself out of any future races, she told Parade Magazine that she believes America is ready for a female leader.
“Yes, I think the country is ready for it. It’s just a question of who’s the best person out there,” she said.
Coy when asked if she could see former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton secure the job, Obama noted that “she hasn’t announced anything, so I’m certainly not going to get ahead of her”.
Clinton, once the First Lady herself, has been non-committal on the issue but leads in a variety of polls examining both the Democratic primaries and the general election.
Commenting on the imminent 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s famous ‘I have a dream’ speech, Obama said she believes her family have “moved the needle” in terms of America and race.
“Children born in the last eight years will only know an African-American man being president of the United States. That changes the bar for all of our children, regardless of their race, their sexual orientation, their gender. It expands the scope of opportunity in their minds. And that’s where change happens.”
