My daughter has been ‘missing’ too since Saturday. We know she’s safe, we just don’t know where she is. She has been in contact with us. Its very frustrating as it’ll be her that decides when she wants to come home. She’s being rebellious and possibly delighting in the worry she’s causing us. She’s 17yrs old. What can we do? To be honest, this generation of kids have lost respect for their parents…when I was her age I wouldn’t have contemplated doing such a thing as there were consequences for our actions. I hasten to add that my parents didn’t beat us but there would have been a clatter when we did something morally wrong. It taught us right from wrong and showed the stark contrast of events in choosing to do right than wrong. Kids have the power now-and they’re well aware of it-so what if they go missing they think as all they’ll get is an earful and a possible grounding-which, in reference to the latter, they don’t feel they have to adhere to as all they’ll get if they disobey is an earful and another possible grounding…a vicious and ineffective circle which only serves to further undermine parental authority.

Laura, I had an authoritarian mother and I am glad those days are over. I do not think that anybody – parent or young adult – needs to have the upper hand and I don’t think a clatter is justified for any reason whatsoever. I agree with child psychiatrists that our job is to gradually hand over decision-making on their own lives to our adolescents and that the most important thing is to continue to keep positive lines of communication open and offer unconditional love, even when we do not like some of the choices they make.

I have a 17-year-old and they do have a very strong need to live their own lives without parental interference and I would say my job at this stage is to be there for him while he finds his own way – and even when he makes mistakes, as we all did at that age. I would think that rebellious and stroppy behaviour is developmentally normal and that the most important thing we can do as parents is to make sure we keep positive lines of communication open and offer them all the support and love we can through what can be a difficult stage for them. I know it can be really hard, but I do think it is the job…

In the case of this missing boy, we have no idea what kind of emotional stresses he is under or his state of mind, so I think it is best not to comment on that. I hope he is OK and knows it is OK for him to come home – that he will be loved and welcomed back…

The original information from the Gardaí didn’t have his age so all we knew was that he was a teenager. Gardaí have now clarified his age and it’s been added to the piece.

Thanks for the comments about this folks, happy to explain. We can leave the thread to get back on topic now.

Thanks Therese, I hope that she has a pang of guilt and comes home. I know i’ve received a thumbs down for my comment re the slap we would’ve gotten when younger and I’d like to make people aware that I’m a logical woman that hasn’t been emotionally scarred by the actions of my parents, I was in the wrong any time I was punished. I’ve spoken to my daughter numerous times, sat down and had the heart to heart, admitted to her that I’m not perfect but all I want for her is to have a great life…for her, not for me..that’s all any parent wants for their children. As for Stephen, I sincerely hope that he’s okay and gets home to his mam and dad soon. There are too many kids doing a runner without giving a thought about the mental anguish that we, as parents go through in waiting for them to return.
