State actor most likely culprit for Nord Stream explosions, according to Swedish prosecutors

Last month a German media investigation quoted unnamed officials as saying that five men and a woman used a yacht hired by a Ukrainian-owned company in Poland to carry out the attack – which Ukraine has denied.

A STATE ACTOR was the most likely culprit for the explosions that incapacitated the Nord Stream gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea last year, an act deemed sabotage, Swedish prosecutors said.

However, they cautioned that the identity of the perpetrator was still unclear and hinted that it was likely to remain so.

Public prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist from the Swedish prosecution authority said in a statement that his office’s investigation is focused on examining if Swedish interests or Swedish security were threatened by the act.

The Swedish authorities are also keen to find out whether the explosions were prepared on their territory.

“Our hope is to be able to confirm who has committed this crime” but “it should be noted that it likely will be difficult given the circumstances” Mr Ljungqvist said.

Last month a German media investigation quoted unnamed officials as saying that five men and a woman used a yacht hired by a Ukrainian-owned company in Poland to carry out the attack.

The Ukrainian government has denied involvement.

Mr Ljungqvist stressed that the case, described by Swedish prosecutors as “gross sabotage”, is complex and hence time-consuming to investigate.

The prosecutor’s office gave no estimate on when the Swedish investigation would conclude.

“This concerns a crime whose circumstances are difficult to investigate. The detonations took place 80 metres under the water on the ocean floor in the Baltic Sea,” Mr Ljungqvist said.

Separately, he told Swedish media that prosecutors’ main line of investigation is on whether a state actor was behind the explosions, given the substantial resources and skills needed to carry out such an attack.

“Considering all the circumstances, our main (investigation) track is that it is a state that is behind it.

“We aren’t ruling out that there could be non-state actors capable of doing this,” he told the Swedish news agency TT.

“But then we’re dealing with very few companies or groups. Considering all the circumstances, our main (investigation) track is that it is a state that is behind it.”

Four leaks were discovered on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines that run from Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea, on September 26 and 27 respectively.

Two of the leaks were in the Swedish economic zone, northeast of the Danish island of Bornholm, and two in the Danish economic zone, southeast of Bornholm.

Both Swedish and Danish seismic measurements showed that explosions took place a few hours before the leaks were discovered.

Authorities and investigators in Denmark, Sweden and other countries early on suspected the explosions were deliberate attacks and consider them sabotage.

The pipelines were not operational at the time, due to disputes between Russia and the European Union amid the war in Ukraine.

The United States and some of its allies have long criticised the pipelines, warning that they posed a risk to Europe’s energy security by increasing the continent’s dependence on Russian gas.

@Gerry Dornan: Germans found a yacht, the Andromeda, rented by Polish company on Sept 6th. It sailed to the Island (Bornholm) near to sabotage sites shortly before the explosions, they also found explosive residues on the table of the yacht that matches the explosives used to blow up the pipelines. They are starting to think it was a joint Polish-Ukrainian operation. Though some are sceptical as the pipelines were 200 feet underwater, it is difficult to plant explosive so deep without specialist equipment the 50 foot yacht could not carry, so the explosive might be a plant to throw off investigators.

    @David Jordan:

    Hi Mr. Jordan,

Your posts are nearly always very interesting and full of interesting views and facts. I have noticed that you always post information that goes along with the narrative that fits with the mainstream narrative.

I was just wondering whether you are employed by any intelligence agency to push certain angles and push back against alternative possibilities.

I do find your posts very interesting, but I often wonder what is the motivation behind them.

@lot james: With upmost respect, other people seem to be based their beliefs on emotion and gut suspicion not facts. I am very fact based, maybe I might miss real conspiracies, but I think I sometimes can be bang on especially when people seem to gather around the same idea a bit like a herd.

So here is my idea in more detail. I include links to articles that you can read to confirm my interpretations.

Firstly, the ship Hersh claimed that was involved in the sabotage, the Alta was removed from service in 2012 and was in a scrapyard at the time, visible from satellite imagery and AIS vessel tracking data (see the website Marine Traffic).

When Hersh was asked about this error, he corrected his story and said he meant it was an “Alta-Class” ship. However, all Norwegian Alta-Class and Oksøy-Class ships were accounted for during this period, they were hundreds of miles from the pipelines as confirmed via AIS ship tracking data and satellite imagery.

Hersh also claimed the explosives were triggered by a Sonobuoy dropped by a Norwegian Navy P8 aircraft, however, Norway did not have any P8 aircraft in service at the time (they are due to go into service later this year). They were testing One aircraft they received November 2021, however, its ADS-B transponder put it over northern Norway at the time.

The German criminal investigation has uncovered the following:

    1. 6 people arrived in Germany with forged Ukrainian passports (Der Spiegel and Die Zeit). The newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported on March 12 that some in the group may have shown Bulgarian passports too.

    2. There were 2 divers, 2 assistants, 1 captain and 1 medic (Die Zeit).

    3. They hired the Andromeda in Rostock on 6th Sept (Der Spiegel and Die Zeit). It’s a big yacht, Bavaria C50 class, has three to five cabins and space for up to 11 people.

    4. The boat was rented through a company in Poland, owned by 2 Ukrainians (Der Spiegel and Die Zeit).

    5. The boat left the port of Rostock on Sept 6th, sailed to the German island of Rügen and then finally to the Danish island of Christiansø, 20km north west of Bornholm, and 40km from site of blasts that happened on 26 September.

    5. When the boat was returned, German authorities detected traces of military explosives months later that chemically matched the explosives residue on the pipelines (Der Spiegel and Die Zeit).

    6. While there are indications pointing to Ukrainian, German investigators suspect this was a false flag operation intended to frame Ukraine (Why would Ukrainians use false Ukrainian passports?)

    7. There was a Russia linked ship (the Minerva Julie: IMO: 9380831) that was suspiciously circling the area of the explosions from the 6th – 13th September, same time as the yacht (AIS Data):

    See this Map: https://i.insider.com/640a4fe908f27b0018489472

I think this is a good as a smoking gun.

    Russia Theory:

A Russia linked ship suspiciously circling the area, the Minerva Julie, planted the explosives, and it was Russians who rented the Andromeda, used false Ukrainian (and Bulgarian) passports and left evidence to frame Ukraine.

Gazprom sent out Force Majeure warning letters to European customers 2 months before the explosions. Force Majeure lets Gazprom off the hook for billions Euros in unfulfilled contracts, if the pipelines are attacked.

My take. Russia might have carried out the attack and framed Ukraine – Poland.

You can tell if a person is posting via a web browser rather than the app, as they can split their comments into paragraphs, that’s not possible using the very limited Mobile app. I’ll take a screen shot of my phone, of me making this very comment, so you believe me.

@Sean Padraig O Brien: Germans found a yacht, the Andromeda, might have been involved in the sabotage. They found traces of military explosive on the table of the yacht that matches the explosive on the pipelines. Although some investigators are sceptical, as the pipelines were 200 deep, a depth that requires specialist decompression chambers or ROVs, the yacht didn’t have, they note the yacht was rented out to a Polish company, so they are starting to think it was a joint Polish-Ukrainian operation.

“The German investigation has determined that traces of “military-grade” explosives found on a table inside the boat’s cabin match the batch of explosives used on the pipeline.”

“Based on the initial German findings, officials have been whispering about the potential involvement of the Polish or Ukrainian government in the attack. ”

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2023/04/03/nord-stream-bombing-yacht-andromeda/

That said, there’s speculation that they might be the same people who blew up Vladlenta Tarsky and Maria Dugina, dissident Russian military / intelligence opposed to the Kremlin and the war, I’m sceptical they are linked to the Nord Stream attack.

The Germans are pathetic, they stand idly by while their billions-of-euro pipeline is destroyed, as well as their economy based on cheap Russian oil. Now they have to buy liquid gas from the US which is not only more expensive but much more polluting.

Isn’t it strange that this yacht was only “found” after Pulizer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh exposed details of how elite US navy divers based in Florida placed the explosives during a NATO exercise in the Baltic Sea, explosives which were later triggered by a Norwegian airforce plane.
It is impossible that Baltic NATO countries would not have known about this act of international terrorism.
Shame on the The Journal for carrying this evidently false news on behalf of the US/NATO.
The pipeline was covered in steel and concrete shirt 80 metres below water. No way a group of amateurs could have carried out this operation. No way the huge amount of explosives involved could have passed through several countries without being discovered..
Seymour Hersh’s report can be found on youtube. You won’t find it in any Irish or British newspaper.

I don’t know if the CIA was responsible, it’s definitely possible and it’s great to be able to read his articles.
But I find it interesting that he’s American, lives in America and publishes in America. If he was Russian and lived in Russia and published article critical of Russia he’d probably have been pushed out a high storey window long ago.

@David Jordan: Basically we don’t know who did it. One thing I do believe is that people tend to give too much credit or simply overestimate the abilities of these agencies to efficiently carry out tasks without getting traced. The Skripal poisoning by Russia is a good example If the CIA were as efficient as people make out then you’d think they would have been used by the US to “plant” WMDs in Iraq to be conveniently found by western forces when they invaded or soon after they invaded. Think of the embarrassment/shame to the US that would have been saved, if the justification for the invasion was “proved” because WMDs were discovered and ergo the US was “right” all along, instead the US has to forevermore be reminded how wrong they were and that the invasion was definitely unjustified
