Occupy Wall Street protests continue - and draw overseas attention

The protests against corporate greed have drawn comment from the leader of Iran, who said they show how “US capitalism is on the verge of collapse”.

THE OCCUPY WALL STREET protests continue apace across the United States today, as demonstrations enter their fourth week.

Protesters have occupied a park in lower Manhattan near Wall Street to rally primarily against corporate greed as what they say is the primary cause for the country’s failing economy.

Demonstrations have taken place in various locations across the country, from California to Maine. On Tuesday, more than 50 people were arrested at the Occupy Boston movement for allegedly trespassing when moving to a second site overnight from their original encampment on the city’s Dewey Square.

The protests are being watched internationally: yesterday, Iran’s Supreme Leader said that the wave of protests reflects a serious problem that will ultimately topple capitalism in America. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei claimed the United States is in a full-blown crisis because its “corrupt foundation has been exposed to the American people” and that “US capitalism is on the verge of collapse,” reports State channel Press TV.

The remarks came a day after US officials said the Obama administration plans to leverage charges that Iran plotted to assassinate Saudi Arabia’s ambassador into a new global campaign to isolate the Islamic republic.
