Dr Niall Muldoon has been working in child protection for 20 years.

DOCTOR NIALL MULDOON has been announced as the new Ombudsman for Children.

Muldoon will be formally appointed by President Higgins pending approval by the Oireachtas.

There had been 97 applications for the post, with Muldoon being chosen by the Public Appointments Service.

Muldoon is currently the Director of Investigations at the Ombudsman for Children’s Office. He is a registered clinical and counselling psychologist, was formerly the National Clinical Director of CARI – children’s charity based in Dublin, Cork and Limerick.

He has worked in the area of child protection for nearly 20 years.

Muldoon replaces Emily Logan, who took up the role of Chief Commissioner of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission in October last year.

Children’s Minister James Reilly said that he was encouraged by the interest in the role.

“I am encouraged by the significant interest in the post of Ombudsman for Children. It is an integral part of an enhanced architecture in this State devoted to improving the lives of our children and young people.”
