Blocking, unfriending and privacy - new guide launched to help women protect themselves on Facebook

The guide was launched by Women’s Aid and Facebook.

A NEW SAFETY guide was launched today geared towards showing women how to better protect themselves on Facebook.

A Guide to Staying Safe on Facebook was launched today by Women’s Aid and Facebook at the company’s HQ.

The guide was created with safety experts and NGOs in the field of women’s safety, such as the National Network to End Domestic Violence in the US (NNEDV).

It provides practical advice on three key areas: security, privacy and having a trusted network on the social media platform.

The guide details things like how to set up login approvals, login notifications and how to perform privacy checks so that people can check how private their profile is to strangers.

It also offers advice on how the unfriend and block people as well as activate timeline review and other features other people may not know about.

Women’s Aid is an organisation dedicated to helping victims of domestic abuse.

According to the organisation, online and offline stalking, damaging rumours, partners demanding access to private passwords and sexually explicit images being shared without consent are among common digital abuse issues reported through its helpline.

“Digital abuse in intimate relationships is real and it is harmful,” said director of Women’s Aid Margaret Martin.

“We have long been concerned about disclosures of digital abuse made to our National Freephone Helpline and other services.

The impact of this type of insidious abuse on women’s lives cannot be underestimated.

    Ulster Bank are the worst bank I ever dealt with. Absolute no interest in talking just red tape after red tape and applies the same rules no matter what the circumstances is.

    Personally speaking I found UB a pleasure to deal with. Staff could not have been more helpful. The so call ‘red tape’ you refer to is in this day and age essential in the banking sector. The ‘ah sure it’ll be grand’ for of banking is well and truly over. If they bend the rules for you, where does it stop? Then (hypothetically) if down the road something happens and you had to be chased for money. They wouldn’t have a leg to stand on with the courts or central bank because they broke procedure.

    No private business will support a town to lose money. Ridiculous comment. Speak to the government. British companies brought so much competition to Ireland. Love my tracker. Irish companies have to try and complete. They’re the ones that ripped you off for years.

    Back in 2006 I was coming off my 2 year fixed introductory mortgage rate,the Irish bank I was with declined to give me a tracker.Ulster bank give me a tracker and paid my legal fees to move.My tracker has saved my family from serious financial headaches.Thank you Ulster Bank.

    These rates are applicable for new customers. We need to see a start to interest rate reductions for existing customers.
