A spokesperson for the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) said they were aware of the accident and that the Air Accident Investigation Unit of the Department of Transport (AAIU) was investigating with the relevant emergency services.

“The Irish Aviation Authority will support the AAIU in its investigation into the accident.”

The AAIU said it had been notified of an accident involving “a twin-engined general aviation aircraft in the vicinity of Lisselan, Co Waterford” and that it was deploying a team of four air accident inspectors to commence an investigation.

While crash investigators have yet to confirm the nature of the flight, online flight tracking websites said the plane involved was a privately owned Vulcanair P68C flying between Sligo and Beziers, in France, which turned around off the south coast of Ireland and headed back towards Waterford Airport before the crash.

Sinn Féin TD for Waterford David Cullinane said it was a “shock” to the local area, adding that the community’s thoughts are with whoever was on the plane.
