Poll: Should there be one TD per constituency?

Should there be one TD per constituency – or should we keep the current system?

THE CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION is asking people to send in their thoughts about the way in which politicians are elected to Dáil Éireann.

One regular suggestion regarding changes to the Dáil is that constituencies should be made smaller and should be represented by one TD at a time.

In Britain, a referendum on the alternative vote system would have meant they would have moved to proportional representation – which is the system Ireland uses – but they would have kept one MP per constituency. The referendum was defeated.

While one TD per constituency would enable TDs to concentrate on a far smaller section of the country, it would mean that people would not be represented by multiple people from multiple parties.

Should there be one TD per constituency?
