POLICE IN MANCHESTER believe a new scheme, known as Clare’s Law, will save women’s lives as it gives them and their families an opportunity to find out information about a partner’s violent past.
The Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme was introduced in September 2012 following the brutal murder of Clare Wood. She was killed by her ex-partner George Appleton who had previous convictions of harassment and violence against girlfriends.
Clare’s Law can be used by anyone who has concerns about a partner’s abusive behaviour or is worried about somebody they know who may be in a relationship and at risk of violence. Disclosures are made by police if deemed appropriate by a decision-making committee.
Some opponents of the law believe the law jeopardises civil liberties, while others think it could put women at risk if men are given a false all-clear.
The scheme can also be used by men inquiring about their female partners.
In today’s poll, we ask: Would you like to see Clare’s Law introduced in Ireland?
