LAST MONTH, PRIVATE rents hit the highest they’ve been since Celtic Tiger days with the Consumer Price Index confirming they are now 35% higher than in 2010.

And as if that didn’t make things tough enough for renters, the Budget announcement on Tuesday didn’t provide any mention of rent certainty.

Private rent prices

The CSO released figures in the Consumer Price Index this week which showed rental costs are now 35% higher than their lowest in 2010, while the Real Estate Alliance confirms that rents are getting so high it will be impossible for potential first-time buyers to save for the deposit on a house.

No rent certainty with Budget 2015

A highly touted measure was conspicuously absent in Budget 2016 - rent certainty. While it’s mooted that there was a falling out between Finance Minister Michael Noonan and Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly, Michael Noonan says they ‘simply ran out of time.’

  • There’s a housing crisis in Ireland, the Simon Community says, with 76% more homeless families now than in January of this year. 
  • Restrictions in planning means that Japanese architects are coming up with some innovative tiny houses.
  • The Longboat Quay architect says the complex is ‘a very good building’ and he doesn’t understand what all the fuss is about.
