'It had bright green carpet when we moved in': Rachel lets us inside her transformed hallway

Rachel and her husband bought a house that hadn’t been decorated in 40 years.

EACH WEEK, WE ask someone based in Ireland with a passion for interiors to share one photo of their favourite spot in their home.

Rachel Trimble and her husband bought a 1960s home in need of renovation in Belfast last year.

“The house that we bought hadn’t been decorated in over 40 years,” says Rachel. “We knew it would be a big project, but we were excited to take it on as we had never done something like this before. I really enjoyed the whole process and would love to do it again.”

This week, Rachel (@renovating26) chatted us through her favourite spot: her hallway.

What do you love about this part of your home?

When we bought our house, the hallway had bright green carpet and was just awful in general. The hall is now one of my favourite parts of our home. I love the patterned tiles and the dark colour we chose for the walls. It feels much more homely.

What’s your favourite object in here and why?

My favourite object in our hall is the bookcase. My dad bought it from an auction about 20 years ago and he gave it to me when we had finished renovating. It fits in perfectly.

Be honest: how much tidying did you do before taking this photo?

I had to do a lot of tidying for this photo! Our hall is usually covered in coats and shoes. Getting storage built under our stairs is on the to-do list. Then I will have somewhere to hide all the mess!

What was your inspiration when you were putting this room together?

I’ve always loved entrance halls that have patterned tiles so I knew this was definitely what I wanted when we started renovating.

Is there anything in here you’d like to change?

The only thing I would like to change is the radiator. I wish it didn’t have to be there at all and think it’s far too big. But I’m hoping to get a radiator cover made to try and hide it.

How well does this photo reflect the rest of your home?

I think this photo does reflect how the rest of our house is styled. We tried to keep a similar theme throughout the renovation.
