Scotland to get an extra Bank Holiday day for the World Cup this year

Just in case you needed another reason to back Ireland in the qualifiers…

SCOTLAND IS SET to get the day off work to watch their national team’s first World Cup match this summer.

Scottish First Minister John Swinney proposed Monday 15 June as a Bank Holiday, the day after Scotland’s opening World Cup match against Haiti in Boston.

Swinney said the day would allow the country to “come together to share the occasion” and highlight the wider benefits of Scotland being on the world stage, from tourism to business opportunities.

The holiday will initially apply only to Scottish government staff and will be formally confirmed by royal proclamation.

Scotland’s World Cup campaign continues with matches against Morocco on 19 June in Boston and Brazil on 24 June in Miami.

Meanwhile, Ireland must continue to fight for a spot in the World Cup through two play-off matches in March.

The boys in green face Czechia on 26 March and (if they win against Czechia) either Denmark or North Macedonia on 31 March.

If they win both games, they will before play their World Cup opener against South Korea on 11 June in Guadalajara.
