Search for canoeist resumes on Kerry lake

The 38-year-old man has been missing, presumed drowned, since the early hours of Friday morning.

A SEARCH FOR a missing kayaker is to resume this morning on a lake in County Kerry.

Nealie O’Connor has been missing, presumed drowned, since the early hours of Friday morning.

The 38-year-old father is an experienced kayaker and he had taken to the lake at Cromane at about 3am on Friday.

It is understood he had been awake to look after his young baby and then decided to go out on the nearby Loch Gaineamháin (White Sand Lake).

The Valencia Coast Guard told TheJournal.ie that a search will resume this morning to try and recover the man’s body.

His kayak and paddles were found over the weekend.

The Shannon-based helicopter will sweep the lake again later today, while the Tralee Civil Defence team and local boats will also assist in the search.

A volunteer dive team from Killarney will be at the scene, as well as members of the public who will search by the shore.

The O’Connor family have remained at the lakeside over the weekend, hoping for the return of the man’s body.
