September car registrations double that of last year

Number of new private vehicles licensed last month were significantly up on last year’s record drop, but fewer goods vehicles were registered.

THE NUMBER OF VEHICLES licensed for the first time last month was more than double the figure for September last year.

Data from the CSO shows that while 2,272 cars were registered in September 2009, over 4,600 were registered for the same period in 2010.

The 2009 figure for private vehicles was the lowest in Ireland since 1967.

However, while vehicle registration figures were up overall, the number of commercial road vehicles registered last month fell in comparison with last year from 777 to 671 – a drop of 13.6%.

More Renault cars were registered than any other brand of car, with Toyota second, and Volkswagen third.
