FINE GAEL LAUNCHED its election manifesto yesterday, which included a plan for the State to give every newborn baby €1,000.
The party outlined a plan to pay €1,000 into an ‘acorn savings account’ for all newborns, and €1,500 for children from disadvantaged backgrounds, to tackle inequality among children.
The universal savings account would have a 4% interest rate, with parents allowed to add a further €2,000 each year.
So today we’re asking: Should the government give every baby €1,000 at birth?
