Man attacked by 'men wearing balaclavas' in Limerick stabbing incident

The assault occurred at around 1pm on Hyde Road in the south of the city.

Updated 7.15pm

A MAN WHO suffered multiple slash and stab wounds in a broad daylight attack in Limerick today is to undergo surgery for “serious injuries”, reliable sources said.

The victim, in his 30s, was attacked by three men on Hyde Road, in the city, around 1pm.

It’s understood the man’s attackers were masked and armed with an assortment of sharp implements.

The three men pulled up beside the man in a silver car and attacked him stabbing him around his whole body.

Garda sources said the victim suffered stab wounds to his “hands”, “head”, “chest”, and “back”.

“Whatever they (we’re armed with) was sharp,” they said.

He was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick.

“All his injuries are serious, and they are deep (wounds). He is in a stable condition, but his injuries are serious.”

Responding to initial reports the man may have had lost some of his fingers in the attack, garda sources confirmed the man did suffer “serious” stab injuries to his hands, but that the extent of those injuries were not yet known.

“He is awaiting surgery,” they added.

A car believed to have been used by the three perpetrators to travel to and from Hyde Road was found burnt out in Clarina, Co Limerick.

Gardaí are to conduct a technical examination of the vehicle later on.

Security camera footage from the Hyde Road, as well as routes from Limerick city to Clarina, is being harvested by Gardai as they hope to trace the three-man gang’s movements leading up to and after the attack.

A garda spokesperson, appealing for witnesses, said:

Gardaí are investigating an assault which occurred on a man on the Hyde Rd, Limerick at approximately 1pm today. The man in his 30s received apparent stab wounds and was taken to Limerick University Hospital.

“It is believed the three men involved in the attack fled in a silver coloured saloon in the direction if the city centre.”

“Gardaí are appealing for anyone in the area at the time, who may have witnessed anything, to contact Roxboro Rd Garda Station on 061 214340 or the 1800 666111.”
