The plans, which were suggested by the party yesterday, would pilot in communities “most affected by food poverty and chronic disease”.
This would involve backing Irish food producers and a price cap on essential items, according to Councillor Conor Reddy, who co-wrote the policy.
Similar initiatives have been proposed internationally, with New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdami promoting a comparable alternative to private retailers. Also, Bulgaria’s agriculture ministry is set to open a state-owned supermarket chain that offers groceries at no more than a 10% markup.
