Temperatures plummeted to -7 degrees in Northern Ireland last night as snow ice warning issued

Meanwhile Met Éireann warned that Saturday and Sunday will be “very cold”.

A STATUS YELLOW snow and ice warning has been issued for counties Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry.

The warning will be in effect from 12am until 10pm Friday, and the UK Met Office has warned that travel disruption is possible from icy stretches early on Friday.

The news comes as Co Down reached -6.8 degrees last night.

The Republic of Ireland can expect a largely dry week, but temperatures are to drop for the weekend with frost wintry showers expected.

Forecast

Met Éireann has said today will be mostly dry and cloudy with sunny spells. Frost and fog in the northern half of the country will clear through the morning.

Tonight will be a cloudy and cold night with lowest temperatures of -2 to 2 degrees. There will be frost and icy stretches.

The first day of 2026 will start off cloudy and with some patchy light rain in Munster and south Leinster, but that will clear and leave a largely dry New Year’s Day with sunny spells and scattered showers.

Thursday night will begin dry with clear spells, but outbreaks of rain and drizzle will spread through the night. Lowest temperatures of -1 to 3 degrees are expected.

There will be sunny spells on Friday, with sleet and snow possible, mainly in the north. Highest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees are expected.

Friday night will be mostly dry and clear with some wintry showers. Lowest temperatures of -2 to 2 degrees are expected.

The national forecaster warned that the weekend will be “very cold”.

Saturday and Sunday will be mostly dry with wintry showers and highest temperatures of 2 to 5 degrees.

Temperatures will drop to between -3 to 1 degrees at night with sharp frosts and ice developing.

The cold weather is expected to continue into early next week. It’s forecast to be largely dry weather, though there will be wintry showers or outbreaks of rain.
