Tesco's smartphone could be arriving here, but don't bet on it
The company’s Irish branch has said it’s made no decision in relation to the launch of its new device in Ireland.
THOSE HOPING THAT Tesco’s new smartphone would be arriving here could be left waiting as the company hasn’t decided whether to release it here.
A spokesperson for Tesco Ireland told TheJournal.ie that no decision has yet been taken in relation to the launch of its new smartphone in Ireland.
Tesco’s Chief Executive Philip Clarke told the BBC Radio 5 show ‘Wake up to Money‘ yesterday that it would be releasing its own premium smartphone by the end of the year.
Much like its own tablet device, the Hudl, Tesco’s smartphone will be based on Android. Clarke described the specs as “comparable to the Samsung Galaxy S5″ although he didn’t elaborate on those details.
The device would be pre-installed with Tesco services such as an online music, movies and ebooks store, and general Tesco shopping services.
He also said the phone would be “aggressively priced” which could see it follow a similar path to Google’s Nexus 5. It’s currently offered on the Google Play store unlocked and at a price that’s around €200 less than its rivals.
Tesco released its own tablet device, the Hudl, back in September 2013 and priced it at £119 (€145). The 7-inch tablet was aimed at the lower-range market and it sold more than 550,000 tablets since its launch. However, it was never released in Ireland.
An updated version, the Hudl 2, will be released in the UK in September.
