Every morning, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you really need to know with your bowl of cornflakes.

1. #STORM TOMAS: Homeowners in coastal areas and in the capital are battening down the hatches this weekend as the tail end of Hurricane Tomas heads towards the south and east coasts. In Haiti, the storm is drenching the earthquake survivors’ camps.

4. #BLOODBATH BUDGET: A report in today’s Independent suggests that low-paid workers will be dragged into the tax net in the budget and middle-income earners also face a wide range of tax hikes.  The St Vincent de Paul is pleading with the government not to target people eking out a living on social welfare payments in the budget. It said many people are already “on the verge of despair”.

5. #INQUIRY: A mother has told a medical fitness to practice hearing that she blames the radiologist who failed to diagnose the build up of fluid on her son’s brain for his death. “I have no child, my children have no brother and my husband has no son,” she said.

6. #KINGMAKER: Jackie Healy-Rae said he would like a bypass and a hospital in exchange for his continued commitment to the government.

7. #SCHOOL RUN: A Tipperary mum faces a 240km round trip to bring her autistic daughter to school every day, because the Department of Education says she can’t travel on the school bus, the Independent reports.

8. #ANOTHER GLEE? Fine Gael claims to have another mystery candidate lined up to run in the Dublin South by-election to replace George Lee.

9. #BREAK UP An infographic claims to show the times of year people are most likely to break up, based on their Facebook status updates.
