EVERY HOUR – on the half hour – TheJournal.ie brings you your fix of election tallies, predictions and results of the last 60 minutes. Here’s how the winners and losers of GE11 are playing out so far.
WINNERS:
Fine Gael – At least in Laois-Offaly, where they have called for a full recount on behalf of their candidate Liam Quinn who is looking at a 26-vote shortfall. And it looks like they are going to get it, with the returning officer to announce at 7.15pm if she intends to resume that recount this evening or in the morning.
Twitter politicos - Despite the Greens’ total wipeout in Election 2011, their chairperson Senator Dan Boyle has promised to keep his Twitter account open. Boyle posted one of the more notorious political tweets in January 2010, when he said he had no confidence in then Defence Minister Willie O’Dea. It led to O’Dea’s resignation.
LOSERS:
Nervous types in Wicklow – The persistent rumour in Wicklow in the past hour was that a full recount may be carried out. Now that Dick Roche has been announced as eliminated, he has decided he wants a full recount. That will start again in the morning.
Metaphors - John Gormley tortured one almost to death in an interview on the RTE Special on RTE Radio 1 this evening. Other political movements had not managed to steal the Greens’ clothes, he said, but they have “borrowed some of our fashion accessories”.
