Charm and character at this renovated 19th-century schoolhouse by the canal

The Old School House was built in 1810, for the children of those building the Grand Canal

LOCATED JUST STEPS away from the Grand Canal in Ardclough, Co Kildare, The Old School House is packed with charm, inside and out.

Built in 1810, the property was used as a school for the children of the workers who were involved in the building of the Grand Canal. Some 210 years later, the property now stands as a four-bed home with an abundance of period features.

The Old School House was restored in 2006 by its current owners, but still retains much of its original charm and character. It spans 2,034 sq ft, while there are 0.32 acres of mature gardens to the rear.

Inside, there are original solid timber floors throughout, as well as timber wall panelling. An open archway leads from the hallway to the dining room, where double doors open to the kitchen.

This space looks as if it has come straight from a magazine, with an exposed stone wall, integrated bench and table, exposed beams and a feature solid wood island. There’s also a double Belfast sink, stone countertops and country-style cabinets, while a picture window overlooks the mature gardens. To the side, there’s a utility room.

The sitting room is both a spacious and cosy space, with exposed beams, Velux skylights and a solid fuel stove, plus a fitted bookshelf to display various items and decorations. An arched doorway leads to a courtyard and lets in plenty of natural light.

Completing the ground floor accommodation, there’s a bathroom with a hand-painted mural, two double bedrooms and a single bedroom.

On the first floor, there’s another lounge with a vaulted ceiling, a solid fuel stove with a marble surround and a feature timber book case. The most impressive feature, however, is the access to a terrace which overlooks the canal and gardens.

The master bedroom is the only bedroom on the first floor, and boasts a walk-in wardrobe and an en-suite bathroom. In the bedroom itself, six windows flood the space with natural light.

Outside, mature shrubs and greenery provide a sense of privacy, while there’s a stone double garage and a green house to the rear. The courtyard and terrace offer the ideal space to unwind, or you can go for a stroll along the canal within seconds.
