FOR CARA DELEVINGNE, it’s a mix of writing and yoga. For Ashling Thompson, it’s regular exercise. For RTE presenter John Murray, it’s opening up to people about how you’re feeling. And for Michael Phelps it was a matter of getting professional help.
But when you’re feeling low, what helps you? Is it taking some time out in the outdoors? Heading to a comedy show? Hitting the treadmill? Or maybe it’s just a matter of turning your phone off for a while and having some time to yourself.
Unfortunately, one in four people will experience a mental health problem in their lifetime. The good news is that there are so many achievable things we can do to boost our mood, but remember – professional help is available if you need it.
Here’s a selection of small things that we know can have a positive impact on your mood:
We also asked around for a few lovely suggestions people swear by:
The company of canines…
I suffer from Generalised Anxiety Disorder and so if my anxiety is really bad something that usually improves my mood is playing with my dog or just taking her out for walk. If I’m in work and can’t get near her, dog pictures on the internet usually do the trick too!
A little TLC…
Long, candlelit showers, with a nail polish/moisturiser pamper afterwards – heaven. Also retail therapy helps but that’s only for emergencies!
Writing for my little one…
When I’m struggling, I write short stories for my son. I find jumping into a completely different world and doing something for somebody else takes me out of my own head space and gives me some perspective.
Laughs from a loved one…
One of my best friends, Niamh, has a truly excellent laugh. It’s really, really loud and full of joy. It never fails to make me laugh too, even when I’m in a bad mood.
A feel-good soundtrack…
A really upbeat song – I always find that cheesy eighties music immediately makes me feel better, no matter what’s gone on that day.
The comfort of the coast…
A bit of time by the coast never fails me. The wilder the sea the better – I take my headphones out, just listen and watch the waves.
