THERE’S SOMETHING STRANGE going on in east Kildare.
Salesian College in Celbridge today celebrated something a little unique – Twin Day.
They’ve 22 separate sets of twins on their books. That’s 19 sets, two split sets with sisters in another school, and one round of triplets.
And that’s just the students, a further six members of staff, five teachers and one secretary, are part of a set also.
So, 28 sets all told. Ridiculous.
The school itself is a large one, with 700 pupils, so only about 5% of them are replicas of each other. It’s still more twins than we can quite contemplate.
“It’s a very, very unique event,” religion and Irish teacher Lloyd Bracken, himself a twin, told TheJournal.ie.
My own twin, Declan, came up from Cork for this, and David Maguire’s (another teacher) brother Neven came up from Charleville.

Yes, that’s tv’s Neven Maguire, Ireland’s foremost celebrity chef. And secret twin too. Could he be the evil one?
The whole celebration ends the school’s Friendship Week, a laudable concept in itself.
“Anyone who is a twin knows how well they do friendship,” says Bracken.
We’ve had Random Act of Kindness Day and now we’re having Twin Day.
Our twins are agents of friendship throughout the school. I call it a fellowship, but that’s just my inner Tolkien talking.
The twins were told they have a mission to win victories for humanity working out of the solid base of unconditional love that defines their relationship.
