Lone unarmed garda disarmed robber in Dublin city centre off-licence incident

A LONE UNARMED garda disarmed and arrested an armed robber at an off-licence in Dublin city centre yesterday evening.

The incident occurred at 7pm on Talbot Street near O’Connell Street in Dublin inner city.

Sources have said the garda, who is understood to be a sergeant, became suspicious when he saw an electric scooter blocking the door of the off-licence.

He went into the shop and saw that there was a man with what appeared to be a handgun and a knife.

He confronted the man, who is understood to be 32, and disarmed him and then placed him in handcuffs.

During the struggle, the gun and knives fell across the shop but were later recovered. The apparent firearm was found to be a very realistic replica.

The man, who is known to gardaí, was taken to Store Street Garda Station where is was detained and questioned.

This afternoon a garda spokeswoman confirmed the arrest.

“Gardaí arrested a man following an alleged public order incident at a business premises on Talbot Street, Dublin 1, that occurred on Monday 11th August 2025 at approximately 7.10pm,” she said.

“The man (30s) has since been charged and is due to appear before the District Court at the Criminal Courts of Justice this evening. Investigations are ongoing.”
