SOMETIMES YOU JUST need a car that’s a bit more rugged and a bit more capable than the others. Perhaps you need more ground clearance or all-wheel drive or just some extra cladding to help protect the car from the rough terrain.
So, if you need a rough and tough off-roader to get you off the tarmac and back on again, here are five vehicles with decent off-road capabilities.
Under €150k: 2016 Range Rover, €129,950
The Range Rover is the ultimate in off-road luxury. It is a very accomplished and polished machine with an impressive engine, super chassis, superior build quality.
It handles great for a 4×4 and is jam packed with sophisticated technology including adjustable and long travel air suspension and a computer-controlled Terrain Response four-wheel drive system that work together to haul you across all types of rough terrain.
Under €60k: 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser, €59,500
The Toyota Land Cruiser is a very reliable 4×4 and few nameplates are as synonymous with off-roading as the Land Cruiser.
It is tough as nails with military roots, making it great for when the going gets tough. The Land Cruiser has a low-ratio gearbox and lockable centre differential, which really help when you do venture off the beaten track.
Under €50k: 2017 Ford Ranger, €41,000
The Ford Ranger is a very capable and versatile off-road pick-up truck with loads of on-board technology. It is powerful and sure-footed with handsome looks and enviable torque, towing and wading capabilities. This Ranger Double Cab comes with a huge amount of features and high specification.
Under €30k: 2017 Suzuki Vitara, €25,495
The Suzuki Vitara has a great chassis and low running costs. It comes with Suzuki’s AllGrip four-wheel drive system with ‘feed forward’ capability which ’anticipates slippage based on road surface, throttle opening position, steering angle and other factors’.
This is a top-of-the-range SZ5 model and comes with all the bells and whistles you could need.
Under €15k: 2008 Jeep Wrangler, €11,950
The Jeep Wrangler harks all the way back to the original General Purpose vehicle of 1941, it also had a starring role in one of the best movies of the 90s: Jurassic Park. So if you need to out run some dinosaurs, this is the car for you.
This particular model looks bombproof and check out that nifty three-piece hardtop. This is one cool and fun machine.
