YOU MIGHT THINK you know your best friend – but what happens when you discover they have a life-changing secret?
That’s the premise of the new action-comedy Ride or Die, which begins on Prime Video later this week.
It stars and is executive produced by actors Hannah Waddingham and Octavia Spencer. Here’s everything you need to know about it.
What’s it all about?
Ride or Die is about best friends Debbie Claybourne (Octavia Spencer) and Judith Burton (Hannah Waddingham).
Twenty years into their friendship, the women think they know everything about each other.
But after an event one night, they get involved in a shootout and Judith whips out a gun.
Yep, Debbie is about to discover that her best friend is an international assassin.
And things only get worse from there. A mysterious figure emerges from Judith’s past, a hit goes horribly wrong, and both of the women are forced to go on the run together.
Oh dear. So where’s it set?
It’s set in the UK, but then the women go on the run on a road trip across Europe.
So expect to see lots of beautiful sights, while the women are pursued by police, highly trained assassins, and some very dangerous criminals. Not an ideal type of road trip, in fairness.
Who’s behind the series?
It was created by writer and performer Tessa Coates.
As a stand up she’s performed at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and had her show Witch Hunt adapted into a Radio 4 stand up special, Resting Witch Face. Her debut show Primates was adapted for US television.
She also co-hosts the critically acclaimed podcast Nobody Panic, and recently published a companion book of the same name. As far as we know, she is not secretly a spy.
Who’s in the cast?
Well, there’s Hannah Waddingham, who you’ll know from Ted Lasso, Game of Thrones and films like Fall Guy.
Starring alongside her is Octavia Spencer, who starred in The Help, Hidden Figures and Ma.
Other stars in Ride or Die include Bill Nighy, who plays ‘The Director’, Ed Skrein (Deadpool), Sylvia Hoeks (Blade Runner 2049) and Calam Lynch (Bridgerton).
What’s the tone of it?
From the trailer, this looks like a good one to watch if you’re a fan of road-trip movies but also of spy and thriller spoofs like the excellent Spy (starring Melissa McCarthy and Rose Byrne – if you haven’t seen it, do seek it out).
There’s plenty of action, but above all it’s a comic film about two best friends trying to be honest with each other – and escape some hitmen.
When can we watch it?
Ride or Die will stream on Prime Video from 15 July.
